Driven by our conviction that there is a way to create a world of equal opportunities for people with disabilities, the Society for Child Development (SfCD) was set-up as a non-profit organization in 1992 with innovative programs and initiatives for its actualization.
These programs and initiatives address the needs of children with disabilities and their families through the growing years, and then build capacities to enter the world of work. Our work does not end here – we work with our newly trained workforce with employment and self-employment ventures using the creative arts as our primary modality.
Ninety percent of SFCD is staffed by people with disabilities, even in core operations.
"Education is the key that unlocks the treasure chest of endless possibilities in life."
For over three decades, the Society for Child Development has been a trailblazer in championing the rights of people with disabilities. Through relentless dedication, they have created opportunities that have transformed thousands of NGOs over the years. By providing valuable resources, expertise, and support, they have empowered these organizations to better serve the disabled community. Their impact has been profound, benefiting over 100,000 individuals with disabilities. From education and healthcare to vocational training and advocacy, the Society for Child Development has been instrumental in fostering a more inclusive society, where every person can thrive regardless of their abilities. Their unwavering commitment continues to leave a lasting mark on countless lives.

Ex. Ms. Indira Rai
Indira Rai, our Senior Vice President, was more than just a corporate leader; she was a mentor, a believer in our work, and a beacon of unwavering determination to make a difference in the world. Her strong personality radiated resilience and commitment, inspiring everyone around her to reach their full potential.
In the toughest of times, Indira’s support for the Society for Child Development never wavered. She stood as a pillar of strength, guiding us through challenges and encouraging us to persevere in our mission to uplift the lives of underprivileged children. Her passion for our cause was palpable, and her dedication was unyielding.
Tragically, her passing left an irreplaceable void in our hearts and our organization. Indira Rai’s legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched and the indelible mark she left on the Society for Child Development. Her memory fuels our continued commitment to creating a brighter future for the children we serve.

Education plays a pivotal role in the lives of children with disabilities, as it provides them with essential skills, knowledge, and opportunities for personal development. It serves as a powerful tool for empowerment, enabling these children to overcome barriers, reach their full potential, and lead independent and fulfilling lives.
Education not only equips them with academic proficiency but also fosters social inclusion, self-confidence, and a sense of belonging. It promotes awareness and understanding among peers, teachers, and the wider community, breaking down stereotypes and creating a more inclusive society.

Investing in the education of children with disabilities, especially those who are mentally challenged, is of paramount importance in India. Providing them with equal access to quality education unlocks a world of opportunities, enabling these children to flourish and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
Education equips them with essential life skills, fostering their independence and self-confidence. Moreover, an inclusive educational environment nurtures empathy and understanding among peers, fostering a compassionate society. By recognizing the potential in every child and ensuring their right to education, we empower them to actively shape their own futures and break the barriers of societal limitations. Ultimately, an educated and inclusive society benefits us all by celebrating diversity and promoting the growth of each individual.
Dear Esteemed Members and Supporters,
In the radiant glow of our 30 year journey, the Society for Child Development stands as a beacon of hope and compassion for children, especially those with mental disabilities. Three decades of unwavering dedication have transformed countless lives, and we stand proudly on the threshold of a brighter future.
The heartwarming truth is that our accomplishments, our reach, and our ability to impact over 300 individuals with disabilities daily would not be possible without your incredible support. It is your trust, your generosity, and your belief in our cause that have fueled our mission. Together, we have forged a path towards inclusivity and empowerment, demonstrating that the potential of every child is limitless.
As we embark on the next chapter of our journey, let us remember that it is through unity and shared purpose that we can continue to uplift those in need. Together, we will shape a world where every child can dream, grow, and thrive.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Dr. Vijay Agarwal
President, Society for Child Development

We aim to involve 200 people to come and help with our annual picnic. This year we were able to reach 156 supporters and to conduct our annual picnic for 1250+ children with disabilities from across Delhi.
“Education for children with disabilities, especially the mentally challenged, holds immense importance in India. It is a transformative tool that fosters their holistic development, empowers them to overcome challenges, and enhances their social inclusion.
Access to quality education ensures that these children acquire essential life skills, paving the way for future independence and self-sufficiency. Moreover, an inclusive educational environment nurtures empathy and understanding among their peers, promoting a more compassionate society. By prioritizing and investing in inclusive education, India can unlock the vast potential of these children, creating a brighter and more equitable future for all.”

SFCD would like to thank the many volunteers who devote their free time to help us in our work. Over the years, we have been blessed with the presence of these angels, who loan us their wings for us to fly!
Their contributions have made it possible for SfCD to embark on new projects related to our programs and expand the reach of our work.
Forever a star in our hearts and minds, Vrinda brings in the much needed collaboration in our product development, market opportunities and fundraising.

We are blessed with her presence!
Sarika, warm and vibrant, jelled with the students during our Saturday Walk program, where students from other special schools would gather together to explore the historical monuments of New Delhi. Sarika helped us with planning and managing the walks well in advance, which left her completely free to focus on the accompanying students.
The walks were a grand success.
Siddhi’s business and organizational skills as a volunteer have been invaluable to several of our programs. In one such program, people with mental disabilities were taught to recycle flowers from temples and hotels that otherwise would be immersed in the river for disposal. These flowers are collected and converted into marketable products. Siddhi updated our Documentation and Revenue models that has been our guide to this day.
Swastik had been a regular volunteer during the Community Awareness meetings held in the District Commissioners office in North Delhi. At that time, Swastik was studying the Japanese language and also working for his degree in Management. Yet, he always found the time to give his 100% attention to the many parents who would attend the meetings with abundant questions and problems.
Swastik was an invaluable asset during these meetings.
Alexandra spent the summer of 2008 with us, helping us develop our websites giving them a fresh perspective. She also regularly visited the slums around Delhi documenting and photographing the proceedings of our Legal Literacy Campaign. Alexandra was pursuing a degree in Political Science from Yale University at that time. She further went on to study Law from the Stanford University Law School. Wish you well Alexandra in all that you do! Your help was invaluable.
Kunal volunteered in the Community Awareness meetings held in the District Commissioners office in North Delhi. At that time, Kunal was learning Japanese. In his words…. “helping families in pain and turmoil made me forget my own worries. I really began to understand the world and just talking with parents of children with disability helped me gain so much insight. I hope I helped them too!”
Thanks Kunal, you did help them. Many families would wait to talk just with you!
When we were most distressed about writing a Business Plan for our programs – Art for Prabhat and Avacayam – Sushrath helped us like an angel from the sky. Not only did he create the plans, but he educated us on the methods of creating and understanding them – not as problems to be completed, but as allies in our work thereafter. His contribution was to help us develop our capacities. We pay it forward though our own work with other NGOs today.
Nick spent the Summer of 2006 in SFCD, when he was a student at Yale. Despite the intense heat, Nick plunged into the hands-on work to fabricate the displays for “A different Artisan” – an exhibition to showcase the many creative skills of the trainees of the Skill Development Center. Spread over 4 galleries, the exhibits were many. Nick worked ceaselessly and won our hearts forever.
All the best, Nick!

Access to medical help, including psychiatric medication, is of paramount importance for children with disabilities, particularly those with mental health conditions. Such medications play a critical role in managing symptoms and improving the overall quality of life for these children.
By providing appropriate psychiatric medication under the guidance of healthcare professionals, we can effectively address issues such as anxiety, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and other mental health conditions.
These medications help to regulate brain chemistry, mitigate symptoms, and enhance cognitive functioning, allowing children to better engage in daily activities, form meaningful relationships, and optimize their potential.
With the right medical interventions, children can experience improved emotional well-being, better self-esteem, and enhanced overall functioning.
Recognizing the importance of medical assistance for children with disabilities underscores our commitment to inclusivity, equality, and the fundamental right to access healthcare.
It is our collective responsibility to ensure that these children receive the necessary medical support, enabling them to thrive, contribute to society, and lead fulfilling lives.
